A flash verticale of middle-aged Glen Grant

The indies, and never simply Gordon & MacPhail, preserve having the higher hand, and by far, for causes arduous to elucidate – however it’s true that it is the destiny of many a Distillery lately. I would not be too proud…

Glen Grant

Journal advert, circa 1980. Apparently, the admen weren’t conscious of Betteridge’s regulation that type of states that any headline or teaser that ends in a query mark will most likely be answered by ‘ no!’.

Glen Grant 24 yo 1998/2022 (51.1%, Chapter 7, bourbon hogshead, cask #6454, 254 bottles)

Glen Grant 24 yo 1998/2022 (51.1%, Chapter 7, bourbon hogshead, cask #6454, 254 bottles) Four stars and a half

Color: straw. Nostril: proof that Glen Grant may be a lot fatter than we are inclined to imagine. Sunflower oil, engine oil, then chalk and uncooked wool, cider apples, a pack of lemon drops, some inexperienced gooseberries. Fats and zesty on the identical time. With water: swims like a champ. Papayas, pears, mangos, fruit salad, cassata, recent baguette and sourdough bread. Wow, pretty. Mouth (neat): fantastic tight and, certainly, fattish arrival, geared in the direction of doughs, recent breads, bits of lemon zests and extra chalky components. We will name this one too a ‘Sancerre-y’ malt. With water: extra Sancerre, with a salty and peaty aspect that comes slightly sudden. End: lengthy, tight and appropriately vertical, but the mouth really feel stays type of fats all alongside. Inexperienced apples within the aftertaste. Feedback: completely fantastic, within the fashion of some older ‘pure’ GGs by G&M. You recognize, the ‘pale’ vattings. Very high-class.

SGP:562 – 89 factors.

Glen Grant 23 yo 1998/2021 (52.7%, The Whisky Agency, sherry hogshead, 273 bottles)

Glen Grant 23 yo 1998/2021 (52.7%, The Whisky Company, sherry hogshead, 273 bottles) Five stars

Color: gold. Nostril: greener, extra citrusy, maybe extra advanced as nicely, extra on cider apples and lemons, limestone, candlewax, paraffin, sunflower oil as soon as extra, extra lemons, extra limes… Properly, appears to be like like It is simply one other distinctive Glen Grant. The sherry’s for the document, you don’t, nicely I don’t fairly really feel it. With water: roots popping out, gentian, celeriac, horseradish… Mouth (neat): ho-ho, quince and lemons, on grassy leaves and stems. Hyper-citric, very good. With water: oh slightly elegant! Similar excessive tightness, chalk, lemons, inexperienced rhubarb and gooseberries… And nonetheless no sherry in sight, until it as a bone-dry fino or manzanilla. End: lengthy, ultra-clean, however with slightly vanilla and beeswax within the aftertaste. Which might add a sense of civilisation. Feedback: the Sixties had been again within the mid-to-late Nineteen Nineties…

SGP:661 – 90 factors.

Glen Grant 24 yo 1995 + 1997 (49.8%, WhiskySponge, refill barrel and refill hogshead, 443 bottles)

Glen Grant 24 yo 1995 + 1997 (49.8%, WhiskySponge, refill barrel and refill hogshead, 443 bottles) Four stars and a half

Slightly fowl advised me that The Sponge was a lover of outdated Glen Grant and of any correct sequels… Color: straw. Nostril: identical ballpark, clearly, even when this one has much more rootiness, from wild candy carrots to parsnips and comfortable radishes, to not point out gentian. Then whiffs of graphite and liquorice wooden, celeriac, slightly porridge and muesli, walnut skins… Mouth: a lot love for this earthy and really gentiany combo. Extra wild carrots, lemon zests, samphires and dried herbs, thyme, mushrooms, and certainly some fino sherry, with some tight mustard and inexperienced walnuts – even when there wasn’t any sherry concerned right here. End: lengthy, natural and earthy. Extra fruits within the aftertaste, with additionally some yellow chartreuse and verbena liqueur. And mirabelles. Feedback: it is a drier, tighter one and it is completely lovable. Nice multi-vintage bottle by The Sponge, that marine animal ought to speak with Rhum J.M. in Martinique.

SGP:461 – 89 factors.

Glen Grant 23 yo 1995/2019 (51%, The Maltman for Shinanoya, In The Black, Japan, sherry cask, cask #11, 283 bottles)

Glen Grant 23 yo 1995/2019 (51%, The Maltman for Shinanoya, In The Black, Japan, sherry cask, cask #11, 283 bottles) Four stars and a half

Color: gold. Nostril: it is a comparatively rounder one, with extra comfortable waxes, extra floral notes too (dandelion), extra butterscotch and even coconut (a number of drops of liqueur), blancmange, then these pretty aromas that might have a tendency to come back with good sherry, right here milk chocolate, raisins, walnut cake and espresso. All nice, not a single flaw this far. With water: notes of stout and mead, I might say. Marrow soup and Bovril, solely in very small doses. Mouth (neat): the tighter fruitiness strikes again, with plenty of lemon, grapefruit and lemongrass. Some beautiful grassy notes too. With water: beautiful certainly, you’d virtually imagine that is some outdated ex-sherry Bowmore that might have been de-peated with some bespoke system nobody’s ever heard of but. Oh the imaginative and prescient of horror! End: slightly lengthy, slightly meatier and extra chocolaty, however it will stay slightly recent and zesty. Feedback: good enjoyable right here, with nostril and palate being slightly dissimilar so far as the sherriness is anxious. Oh nicely, it is simply one other very glorious one.

SGP:551 – 89 factors.

This could occur, all whiskies in the identical ballpark so far as high quality’s involved. Which is extra nice to the taster when the whiskies are this good, naturally.
