Educating with Tea – TeaTime Journal

Textual content by Betsy L. Haase

An oversize electrical teapot rested on the windowsill when my eighth grade college students walked into the classroom one cheerless day. Plastic gallons of water and a big pitcher occupied the entrance desk, together with two stacks of cups, a plastic canister crammed with sugar, and a serving spoon.

“Clear your desks,” I informed my class as I welcomed them on the doorway. “We aren’t going to battle the malaise at this time.”

Nobody, together with me, was within the temper for the pains essay writing brings. Our writing project might wait. The awful climate had dampened our spirits lengthy sufficient. Grey skies and sharp, bitter winds had continued day after day.

“Are we having a take a look at?” one pupil requested as she made her approach into the classroom. Younger faces turned to me with expectation.

There wasn’t a lot ceremony as I crammed the clear, plastic pitcher with boiling water and some tea baggage. As I stirred with a serving spoon, the infusion deepened to a beautiful rust. All eyes have been on me. I wanted no motivational approach to hook my children; they have been all there—their faces crammed with real surprise.

Every pupil thanked me as I served them a sizzling cup of tea with or sans sugar; some even informed me that they had by no means had sizzling tea earlier than.

Whereas the tea cooled, we talked about what we collectively knew of various tea ceremonies. Those that have been initiated within the methods of tea chatted about their favourite sorts of teas. We shared household tea-drinking traditions. I informed them that in my childhood, tea was the drink of selection for troublesome household talks—at all times adopted by a hug and a slice of cake or a cookie or two.

My college students held their cups, fingers laced, cautious to not spill. Some blew on the recent liquid; some closed their eyes as they swallowed. Just a few sighed. I noticed their wave of rosy-cheeked contentment.

We additionally talked about what dwelling within the second actually means. We have been doing precisely that. Taking tea in school was not a waste of time. It was a approach to revitalize our classroom temper and regroup our ideas. When the scholars have been able to return to their writing that morning, one boy shared that he was going to alter the course of his piece. “Tea restoreth the soul” appeared like a greater subject to discover.
